Information for Investors Regarding GTM plant(Click Here for Introductory Animation-Flash Required)

Introduction To methanol: Methanol which is the main product of GTM or Gas to Methanol plant, is an important chemical raw material. As the name infers, methanol is the obtained by processing natural gas in obtained from gas fields. Methanol itself is used itself as an intermediate feedstock to produce other chemicals that have a variety of end uses. The top three include Methanol itself or Formaldehyde, MTBE or methyl tertiary-butyl ether and acetic acid. Due to its simple molecular structure, highly efficient combustion efficiency, and low level of pollutants when burned, Methanol is being considered for a variety of new uses as a primary fuel source and a primary petrochemical feedstock. These non-conventional and emerging end uses could grow in importance if Methanol costs are lowered. Currently MTBE is used to oxygenate gasoline which to used to enhance octane for a cleaner burning fuel. Methanol can be used to provide hydrogen for powered fuel cell vehicles in the near future.

Iran (914 T scf) has the worlds second largest gas reservoir in the after Russia (1700 T scf) with refineries shallow in the waters of Persian Gulf. With the plant located close to natural gas resources (in shores of Boshehr city close to Asaloye city- Iran’s center of oil and gas production) and southern ports of Iran, the cost of transportation is minimized. A 305 acre of 305’000’000 m2 land for the project was also obtained. The plant categorized as Mega-Methanol plant with capacity of 1.65 million tones per year is considerably different in size from the older plants which infers lower export prices.

The current consumption of methanol is increasing at 5.5% every year with China, Japan, and South Korea importing about 44% of the world methanol resources. Currently the worldwide production capacity is 45 million tones per year. Iran’s predicted estimated export volume by 2009 is 3.7 million tones per year.
